Hardwood Screen & Recoat
Enjoy Your Hardwood Floors For a Lifetime
Many homeowners and businessowners love hardwood flooring for its durability and longevity. This is due to a protective layer of polyurethane that covers the hardwood floors and keeps the raw wood safe from damage. As years pass, and scuffs and scratches accumulate, that layer of protection will begin to wear down and leave the wood beneath susceptible to irreversible damage.

Thankfully, Mr. G Hardwood Floor Refinishing has your back! Our sandless/dustless hardwood floor screening process is as efficient as it is safe! We carefully remove the worn, damaged layer of polyurethane and replace it with a new coating to ensure your floors are completely safe from harm. When we’re done, you’ll be amazed at how beautiful your floors shine!

Mr. G Hardwood
Screening and recoating, often referred to as "buff and coat," is a process that involves lightly sanding the existing finish on hardwood floors and applying a fresh coat of finish on top. This method is suitable for floors with minor surface damage, light scratches, or areas where the finish has worn down over time.
What is Screening and Recoating?
Restores Shine:
Removes dullness and minor imperfections, bringing back the floor's luster.
Protects the Wood:
Adds a new protective layer to shield the wood from future damage.
Cost-Effective:
Much more affordable than a full refinishing project.
Minimizes Disruption:
Takes less time and causes minimal disruption compared to refinishing.

Steps:
To Screening and Recoating

Preparation

Screening

Cleaning
Clear the room of all furniture and rugs to have an unobstructed work area.Clean the floor thoroughly to remove dust, dirt, and debris. Inspect the floor for any major damage or deep scratches. These may require full refinishing.
Use a floor buffer or a professional-grade screening machine equipped with a fine-grit abrasive screen (usually around 120 to 150 grit). Sand the entire floor lightly in the direction of the wood grain. The goal is not to remove the existing finish but to scuff it up to promote adhesion of the new finish. Vacuum or sweep the floor to remove any sanding dust.

Recoating
Wipe the floor clean with a damp, lint-free cloth to remove any remaining dust. Allow the floor to dry completely before proceeding.

Curing
Apply a new coat of the same type of finish that was originally used on your floors. Consult with a professional or the manufacturer to ensure compatibility.Use a high-quality applicator like a lambswool pad or a synthetic applicator recommended for your finish. Apply the finish evenly and in thin coats, following the manufacturer's instructions regarding drying times and the number of coats needed.Allow the finish to dry thoroughly between coats, typically 2-4 hours.
Once the final coat is applied and has dried, allow the floor to cure for the recommended time before placing furniture back in the room or allowing foot traffic.
